I’d been a client of Headley’s for over 10 years and was planning for my retirement. My regular reviews were keeping me on track, but one in particular set me on a new path.
I was in my late 50s with a good salary, but I really wasn’t happy in my job. I couldn’t envisage retiring so young and taking a hit on my income because I expected to need to be earning right up until my mid 60s.
Phil suggested we have a deeper dive into the possibility of immediate retirement, so I had to think seriously about what I needed versus what I wanted – and we figured out what each would ‘cost’. It was a revelation to find out that I could leave my job straight away and my pension would give me an income that would meet my needs.
As tempting as it was, I deferred until the spring because I was due a bonus that would further boost my earnings. Phil promised that he would call on the day after my bonus was due and, sure enough, he did. I’d kept my word and resigned – and it felt liberating.
It was the relationship that I’d built up with Phil that meant I felt comfortable taking his advice and continue to do so as he manages my pensions and investments to make sure it’s all still appropriate for my needs as well as being tax efficient.
I haven’t looked back now that I’m busy golfing more and enjoying my freedom. I just wonder how I ever had time to work!
